Leumi ABL boosts support for Thames Valley and South West
Leumi ABL is extending their regional presence with the appointment of Jonathan Hughes as Regional Sales Director – Thames Valley and South West, and the opening of a new regional office in Reading. Leumi ABL works closely with the regional dealmaking communities and this move acknowledges the importance of the Thames Valley and South West regions to Leumi ABL’s continuing growth strategy.
Jonathan – widely known as ‘Jot’ in the industry – has been actively writing mid market and large ticket Invoice Discounting business for the last ten years, having held senior positions with GE Capital, Euro Sales Finance, Five Arrows Commercial Finance and most recently with GMAC Commercial Finance. A seasoned industry player, he is well known to professional introducers across the regions.
Having operated in Reading and the Thames Valley for some years, Jonathan appreciates the value of being based at the heart of the region’s deal activity: “With the opportunity to open an office here, I’m delighted to be back in Reading. I’ll also be covering the area down to Southampton and across to Bristol and the South West. Leumi ABL is one of the few providers who is really open for business and for the first time in recent years I feel I have now joined a company that is able and very willing to write mid market business.”

Following strong growth during 2009 when we doubled profits, grew our book and expanded the sales and operations teams, we have seen steady growth so far this year. There is no doubt that the market remains difficult but we are seeing an increasing mood of optimism across the dealmaking communities which is now translating into an increase in the number of new opportunities as we continue the slow exit from recession.
Whilst signs are encouraging we remain vigilant; our attitude to risk and our lending credit underwriting remain consistent. This has held us in good stead when there was significant uncertainty in the business funding world, allowing us to grow our client base in a safe and consistent way.
Earlier this year we increased our commitment to the regions with the opening of some new offices and our regional presence now includes city centre offices in Leeds, Manchester and Birmingham.
We have been encouraged by the enthusiastic support from professional introducers across the UK. The Leumi ABL brand continues to grow and gain recognition as a first choice mid tier ABL provider. We place much emphasis on consistently delivering what we promise and this has no doubt contributed to our successes in leading industry awards, this year winning the M&A award for ‘Alternative Finance Provider.’
Our new brand, Leumi Invoice Finance, had a buoyant start to the year and is enjoying rapid growth as many young, healthy businesses seek reliable funding partners to provide the liquidity they need to fuel growth. Maintaining a low client/ client manager ratio helps foster strong relationships with our clients and positions us well to react to their needs with speed and flexibility.
Our broad ABL capability supported by specialised commercial finance facilities, including trade and property finance, from Bank Leumi (UK) plc, ensures that we are well placed to support clients as we continue our growth strategy. With real signs of increased confidence from the business sector, this year’s steady flow of deals looks set to accelerate as the market recovers.

Leumi ABL has built on last year’s achievement with their ACQ Finance award by winning the M&A award for ‘Alternative Finance Provider of the Year.’
Paul Hird, CEO, and Phil Woodward, Managing Director of Leumi ABL, were presented with the award at a glittering ceremony held at the Millennium Mayfair in London on 20th May where more than 350 CEOs, MDs, FDs, advisers, venture capitalists and other financiers gathered to celebrate the achievements of the industry.
This award from M&A recognises the achievements of an alternative finance provider that has proved itself to be pivotal to the dealmaking process. The judging panel comprised venture capitalists, corporate financiers, lawyers, advisers and financial journalists.
Part of Bank Leumi (UK) plc, Leumi ABL’s flexible and highly personal approach together with its full ABL product capability including stock and trade finance, have won much support from the deal making community and fuelled the growth of their many clients across the UK.
Phil Woodward comments: “Winning this award is a tremendous achievement for all of us at Leumi ABL. Beating competition such as KBC Business Capital, Venture Finance, Bibby Financial Services and GE Capital is a huge recognition of the approach we take to structuring and delivering facilities that will truly support our clients’ growth ambitions.”

Leumi ABL continues sales team expansion
Following another year of successful growth, Leumi ABL has added another experienced industry specialist to their sales team.
Peter Scaife, already well known to the Yorkshire deal-making community after 17 years in sales and business development with Lloyds TSB Commercial Finance, has joined Leumi ABL as Regional Sales Director – Yorkshire and North East. Having also spent 14 years in banking with Standard Chartered covering a variety of roles including Corporate Banking and Relationship Management, Peter brings a wealth of experience to Leumi ABL.
In his new role he will be working to enhance the already excellent reputation and brand name that Leumi ABL has in the region and to source and convert large lend opportunities in the £1m to £25m range. Commenting on his appointment, Peter said: “After a long and successful career with Lloyds TSB I am delighted to have the opportunity of joining a highly respected team of like minded individuals in a successful and rapidly growing ABL specialist.”
John Walsh, who has been instrumental in building Leumi ABL’s profile in Yorkshire and the North East over the past three years, is now spearheading the growth of new brand, Leumi Invoice Finance, in the North.
